Sigma Chi's Derby Days raises more than $20,000 for cancer research

The University of Richmond chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity raised more than $20,000 for breast cancer research last week with the help of sorority participation in Derby Days, its annual philanthropic event. The Sigma Chi brothers encouraged seven on-campus sororities to compete against each other in a T-shirt sale, bake sale, car wash, pieeating contest, powder puff football game, scavenger hunt and a brother's auction. The winners of each event were chosen based on the amount of money they raised per fundraising event and by the points they scored per game.

Some students decry performance of Vagina Monologues

The cast and supporters of "The Vagina Monologues" expect a successful series of performances this weekend at the University of Richmond despite written dissent from the College Republicans. The Monologues, which is performed internationally around Valentine's Day to support V-Day, a global movement to stop violence against women and girls, opened Wednesday night and will be performed again at 9 p.m.

Ayers honors students who used CPR to save woman last semester

A ceremony was held at the University of Richmond's Weinstein Center for Recreation and Wellness last night to honor the people who worked together to save a local woman's life when she collapsed during a Pilates class last semester. Three Richmond professors prepare for Ironman Florida Triathlon

Three University of Richmond professors will breach their mental and physical limits when they compete in the Ford Ironman Florida Triathlon in Panama City Beach on Saturday. Susan Leahy, 40, the director of reading; Carmen Hamlin, 30, a 1997 Richmond alumna and adjunct English instructor; and Melissa Pine, 30, a visiting history lecturer, have been training for the past year to swim 2.4 miles in the Gulf of Mexico, bike 112 miles and run a marathon within 17 hours during one day. "I'm not nervous yet," Leahy said.
