The Spiders were quick to break the deadlock, jumping to a 2-0 lead within the opening three minutes thanks to goals from sophomore attacker Max Merklinger and first-year attacker Aidan O’Neil.
The University of Richmond men’s basketball team rallied behind graduate forward Matt Grace on Sunday afternoon, in a fight until the end against the visiting Fordham University Rams. The Spiders defeated the Rams 68-58 behind Grace’s career-high 21 points on his 24th birthday.
Senior forward Tyler Burton led the team with 23 points, shooting nine of 20 from the field. Senior center Neal Quinn and first-year guard Jason Nelson gave needed support in the second half.
The Spiders stayed composed throughout the game, unlike the fans, and were able to come out with their fourth consecutive season-opening win.
In its fifth year as a program -- and first season since the COVID-19 pandemic -- the team finished undefeated for the first time after its final tournament.
