The Fred Hardy Invitational kicked off Richmond's outdoor track and field season on March 25 and 26 at home in the E.
The University of Richmond played host to the Fred Hardy Invitational this weekend after a two-year hiatus.
It's the fourth quarter for my fellow Collegian seniors and me. I'm sure Papa Spear and the rest of the journalism department had a collective cringe with my lede, which began with probably the most cliche saying in sports, but it's true.
After a disappointing weekend at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships for the men's and women's teams, redshirt senior Andrew Benford is still working to earn a spot at Nationals. The Notre Dame Last Chance Invitational in South Bend, Ind., is a meet for athletes who are on the bubble of competing for an NCAA title, but haven't qualified yet.
The University of Richmond men's and women's track & field started the indoor season building upon the success the cross country teams had in the fall. The Spider women placed fourth and the men placed seventh overall on Jan.
Redshirt junior Matt Llano earned All-America honors Thursday night in the 2010 NCAA National Track and Field Championship hosted by the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore. Llano's time of 29:10.27 in the 10,000-meter dash placed him ninth in a field of the nation's top-24 collegiate distance runners.
The members of the University of Richmond track team are looking forward to a fresh start with the outdoor season after a disappointing outcome at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships in February. The team had the worst finish in the conference in the nine years that coaches Lori and Steve Taylor have been at Richmond, Lori said.
The University of Richmond's track and field teams were forced to skip competition in the Patriot Games Tournament at George Mason University because of the snow last weekend, but despite missing one of the six meets the team uses to prepare for the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships, coaches Steve and Lori Taylor said they were optimistic that the teams would finish in the conference's top three. In order to succeed, Lori said each team member would need to focus on the mental and physical preparation needed to build confidence.
University of Richmond rising senior Andrew Benford raced to a spot on the U.S.
Editor's Note: The Collegian is posting updates from University of Richmond women's track and field coach Lori Taylor, who is in Fayetteville, Ark., with sophomore Nicol Traynor for the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Sophomore Nicol Traynor has earned a bid to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 5,000-meter run, the fifth Spider all-time and the first distance runner in six years to represent Richmond at the meet. Andrew Benford, who was in contention for a spot in the 3,000 steeplechase, fell less than two seconds short of an invitation based on his season-best time.
The NCAA selection committee naming at-large bids for the outdoor track and field national championships won't release results until 3 p.m.
Nicol Traynor will not automatically qualify for the NCAA national meet after a 12th place in the East Regional 5,000-meter run, but her school-record performance earlier this season could be enough to secure an at-large bid. Traynor, a sophomore distance runner, finished in 16 minutes, 36 seconds at the regional meet at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro on Friday night, battling a heavy rain during the race that began just moments before the start. Posting to his Twitter account during the meet, Steve Taylor, men's track and field coach, said Traynor would find out on Monday whether her 16:17.64 school record -- set in Walnut, Calif., on April 17 -- would be enough for an at-large selection. Runners finishing first through fifth at each of four regional meets receive automatic slots at nationals, and seven additional invitations are offered to runners with the fastest times this season.
Five distance runners from the University of Richmond track and field team will travel to Walnut, Calif., to run in the Mt.
Several school records fell and another athlete qualified for the regional track and field meet Friday and Saturday at the Fred Hardy Invitational, the season's only home meet for the University of Richmond track and field team. Junior Andrew Benford placed second in the 3,000-meter in 8 minutes, 59.33 seconds to earn the qualifying standard for the South Regional Meet. Benford said he was mildly surprised to hit the standard so early during the season because he suffered a hamstring injury in mid-January and redshirted the indoor track season. Junior Heather Roush broke sophomore Monica Howard's shot put school record with a 45.23-meter throw.
The University of Richmond's men's and women's track and field teams will have the opportunity to confront four in-state opponents in front of a home crowd during the fifth-annual Fred Hardy Invitational on March 27 and 28. The Spiders' rivals - the College of William & Mary, Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia Tech and Columbia University - are four of the 20 to 25 men's and women's teams expected to attend the invitational in downtown Richmond. The invitational is usually the Spiders' only home meet of the season, but because of construction at Richmond's First Market Stadium, the meet will be held in Sports Backers Stadium at 3001 N.
The University of Richmond men's and women's track teams will be competing in the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships in Kingston, R.I., on Feb.
University of Richmond women's track and field coach Lori Taylor described junior Megan Ney as the "epitome of what Division I athletics is all about." The potential to get stronger and to mature mentally and physically is something that coaches look for in athletes, Taylor said, and Ney has that. "Megan is someone who has committed herself to do whatever it takes," she said.
The University of Richmond men's and women's indoor track and field teams, each with a full team of athletes returning to competition after an exhausting fall season, will travel to Hampton University to compete in the Hampton Invitational, to be held on Jan.
