Reality check: looking at emotional abuse

College is filled with all types of relationships, spanning from acquaintances to engagements. In developing a sense of self, students search for others with whom they can relate well. Unfortunately, with intimate relationships it can sometimes be difficult to realize when a relationship has passed its expiration date. Emotional abuse can spoil relationships.

Cell phones cause catastrophe

There is a growing trend that is threatening to take over the entire world. Actually ... there are a lot of them ... but this one is getting scarier every year. As I'm sure you've guessed (because of the extreme detail I've already used), I'm talking about the cell phone usage trend that has been growing at mushrooming speed since the early '90s. Once upon a time, cell phones were only for yuppies and fantastically ditsy, good-looking and inexplicably wealthy girls from Beverly Hills.

Proclamation ponderings: note to self

Dear Sorry Senior Self, If you're reading this, you're sitting on the opposite side of the chapel, dressed in black like the other senior girls (or, as the informational letter invited, in an "ethnic expression of choice" if you've uncovered some new ancestors during the past three years). Happy Proclamation Night!

Letter: Well done, students

I have expressed disdain in the past for the lack of sports support from the student body and have had trouble understanding the lack of interest.

The next college pandemic?

I was supposed to be writing about Health Care this week. After my rebuttal in the last issue of The Collegian, I was hoping to lay the blueprint for a conservative, free-market solution that avoided a public option.

From "it" to IT

It's Friday afternoon, and everyone is outside for recess. You know that you'll be home in less than half an hour so the only thing on your mind is not being "it." The game of tag was one activity that everyone was able to play.

Some food for thought: D-Hall

Are you looking for a five-star dining experience? In search of a place that offers made-to-order eggs, gourmet waffles, all of the typical fixings, every kind of beverage you can think of and an omelet bar with a chef awaiting your order? Many establishments in the city of Richmond offer such services, but the one I have in mind is surprisingly not in Carytown or Shockoe Bottom.

Letter: Job vs. Career

I graduated in May, still live in Richmond and couldn't help but notice the article in last week's paper about the employment "success" of my class.

A new perception of rejection

What many of us do: We wait all week long, with the hope of seeing that person we are interested in out on the weekend to make our "big move." And when we finally see that person, we rehearse in our mind a thousand different ways to approach him or her, and wonder what line we should use. He/she is with a group of friends and the last thing you want to do is embarrass yourself in front of everyone, so you tell yourself, "I'll just wait until he/she is alone." But throughout the whole night he/she never seems to be alone, so you never make a move. Rejection is an act that many men and women have feared for ages.

A Modest Proposal, 2009

"It is a melancholy object to those who walk through this great town or travel in the country, when they see the streets, the roads, and cabin doors, crowded with beggars of the female sex, followed by three, four, or six children, all in rags and importuning every passenger for an alms.

In Peru, students witness a country and people torn asunder

CUSCO, Peru -- As President Alan Garcia's approval rating continues to plummet, various bloody protests have amplified chaos and killings throughout Peru, notably in the northern Amazon region. Violent uprisings in the north of the country have disrupted transportation, education and tourism, generating international attention as Garcia pursues investment and development projects at the expense of the general public.
