UR Amnesty holds vigil held for Georgia death-row inmate

[This updated version of the story includes the decision to execute Troy Davis on Sept. 21, 2011] Sixteen people gathered in the University Forum last Thursday night to light candles, pray and sign a petition to save the life of a Georgia death-row inmate. Troy Davis was convicted of the 1989 murder of Savannah, Ga., police officer, Mark MacPhail, and is scheduled to be executed tomorrow.

Students rally against Tar Sands Pipeline

Students from three universities protested against the 1,700-mile Tar Sands pipeline at President Barack Obama's University of Richmond speech last Friday. The pipeline would run from Canada and through the United States to the Gulf of Mexico.

Andrew Rich, president and CEO of the Roosevelt Institute, spoke to students in the Brown Alley Room of Weinstein Hall on Monday night about the power of a progressive mind. The Roosevelt Institute, a non-profit organization which opened a new chapter on campus, is the largest student-run public policy development effort in the U.S.

Service held to remember those who died on Sept. 11

The University of Richmond held a 9/11 memorial service last Sunday to remember those who died on September 11, 2001. The university community gathered in the Cannon Memorial Chapel for the special half-hour service that started at 2 p.m. The university chaplain, Craig Kocher, delivered a sermon to start the service.

Students meet to discuss controversial editorial

A group of about 50 students gathered in in Whitehurst on Tuesday Sept. 13, for a two-and-a-half hour discussion on "A Letter to Women," an editorial published in The Collegian. The group consisted of primarily females, and about 10 males showed up.

President Obama addresses packed Robins Center

In an address similar to the one given just a night before to Congress, President Barack Obama highlighted the need for the passage of his American Jobs Act to a packed Robins Center Friday morning. While the majority of his roughly 25-minute speech dealt with possible job creation and tax rates, Obama did take time to address students.

Students participate in summer research

The University of Richmond gave about $350,000 to 217 students to conduct research during summer 2011. Kathy Hoke, associate dean for research support, said most of the research this summer had been done in the sciences, but that there were 50 students doing research in other areas such as history and art. "The amount of money granted has pretty much tripled in the nine years that I have been here," Hoke said. Biology professor John Hayden, who often mentors students during the summer, said the success rate was pretty high for students receiving grants at Richmond. Senior biology major Louis Desantis proposed a plan to work with Hayden on researching botanical life.
