The women’s basketball team celebrated their seniors with a 67-61 win over La Salle at home.
This was the team's lowest point total since the 2019 Atlantic 10 Championship against Fordham.
In the first five minutes, both teams shot the ball well and UR and St. Mary’s traded baskets. UR shot a solid 63% during this stretch.
Although the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting all collegiate athletics, Mooney is not letting the recent layoff justify the team's loss.
This is the second time the team has paused its season.
The Spiders led the game for more than 36 minutes; the team spent only 43 seconds trailing behind Rhode Island throughout the entire game.
The Spiders move to 3-3 as they enter conference play at the start of the new year.
“We didn’t execute very well,” said head coach Aaron Roussell. “VCU came in locked in, ready, realizing this was a rivalry game and I think that was the story.”

It’s a statement victory for UR, who have made a strong case for a national ranking in next week’s Associated Press Poll.
Midway through the first half, the Spiders were able to pick up their intensity and began attacking the basket.
Sherod missed the final 27 games of the 2018-19 season because of a previous ACL tear. This is Sherod’s second ACL injury.
Outside of regularly scheduled practices, each player spends time working on individual skills in preparation for the upcoming season.
Gilyard, who led the NCAA in steals per game last season, is already UR’s career steals leader with 275.
“You want to make sure the coach is going to be there all four years,” Gilyard said. “It’s something you definitely want as a player.”
