UR won two out of their three games this weekend, including both games on Sunday’s double-header.
Pitt Field, home to the University of Richmond’s baseball team, has undergone multiple additions throughout the 2022 offseason, including a seating pavilion and a state-of-the-art batting and pitching practice facility.
Construction on the Pitt Field is set to be completed in the coming weeks. A plaza behind right field will create additional space and seating for fans, said David Walsh, deputy athletic director and chief of operations.
The Baltimore Orioles drafted redshirt junior baseball player Alden Mathes in the 2022 MLB Draft, but he chose to decline the offer and return to UR for another year.
The University of Richmond baseball team had a large comeback in the bottom of the third inning to defeat Norfolk State University 22-10 on April 12.
Designated hitter junior Will Gersky hit a grand slam that lead the University of Richmond to a nine-run first inning and a 9-2 victory over Longwood University on April 5.
The baseball team lost its final game of the three-game series against Cornell University on March 20 after Cornell scored five runs in the ninth inning on the Pitt Field.
“Something that always kept me going was the kids in the stands,” Anthony Shew said. “To get to be somebody’s hero for a little bit, that was always nice.”
The Spiders have relied on depth in a lineup that contains a good mix of young players and veterans.
The baseball team dropped its first home game in a non-conference matchup with Central Michigan 2-10.
The men’s cross country team won their second every Atlantic 10 Championship, the first one coming in 2010.
Senior Brooke Fazio finished first in the 800m, turning in a flat track time of 2:05.70.
Despite the chaos involved with collegiate athletics in 2021, UR student-athletes are going to compete for championships this spring.
“It’s so weird that our lives are all shaken up,” Forte said. “We’re just trying to find ways to move forward.”
