The Ring Dance 2015 discussion will have no impact on the changes to Ring Dance, moderator Eric Yellin, a Richmond American studies professor, said as he read the rules for Wednesday night's discussion.

I could fill a book with things I really love and appreciate about Richmond -- wonderful classes, faculty who take the time and effort to invest in my education, research opportunities, programs like SSIR or WILL, which have so enhanced my time here, and even the fro-yo in D-Hall.

As a proud Westhampton alumna, I want to give words to those Westhampton women who may feel disheartened by the openness to change demonstrated by many since the changes to Ring Dance have been announced.

A cartoon of mine was published in the Opinions section of The Collegian. The cartoon depicted girls of the Westhampton class of 2013 in white dresses, having fun, holding flowers, hugging and having their picture taken. In the next panel were girls of the Westhampton class of 2016 in chains and wearing black dresses. The colors of their dresses had absolutely no connection to race in any way, by any means. The symbolism of the chains for the girls of 2016 was in reference strictly to restrictive changes implemented without any student input, and nothing else. I sincerely apologize for any offense implied by my cartoon and hope that this statement may clear up any confusion.

As a four-year member of Westhampton College Government Association who served as the junior and senior class president during my time at Richmond, I obviously hold a special place in my heart for Westhampton College and its traditions -- particularly Ring Dance, to which I devoted the better part of my junior year.

Ah, Ring Dance. Currently one of the most hotly debated issues on the Collegian's website and surprisingly, I seem to be the centerpiece of some of the comments. One anonymous contributor writes:

Junior women will be asked to wear black dresses to Ring Dance, and escorts will no longer be a part of the ceremony, starting with the class of 2016.

This year despite the wrong date on all of the tickets, Ring Dance seemed to go off with out a major hitch and with less damages than previous years.

Last weekend's annual Ring Dance was held at the Jefferson Hotel to honor the Westhampton Class of 2013. Ticket sales for this year's event were reportedly down from previous years. It is tradition for the junior women to wear white dresses and be escorted down the front staircase by their fathers and non-junior women who attend are expected to wear black.

I get it. Some Westhampton students view Ring Dance as a flawed tradition, and they are fully entitled to their views as members of our class. However, I strongly believe that Ms. Bevels' Jan. 26 article, "Ring Dance ticket sales decrease," took a very one-sided approach to the topic. The article mentioned several women expressing their various opinions about Ring Dance. Presumably this sample should have accurately reflected the opinions of junior women as a whole, yet I found myself overwhelmed with the amount of anti-Ring Dance sentiment included in the article. I would argue that this opinion is not indicative of the majority of the class of 2013. More than 65 percent of us still will be in attendance, yet every year The Collegian features virtually the same article with a few individuals vocally dissenting, and as a junior now myself, I'm tired of reading it. Where is the representation for the large population of students who are actually excited for Ring Dance?

On Feb. 4, members of the junior class of Westhampton College will file into the Jefferson Hotel in long, white dresses, their faces beaming. But there will be fewer faces in the crowd this year.

OK, I know that I wrote about Ring Dance for last week's wonderful edition of The Collegian, but to be honest, Ring Dance and Ring Dance-associated activities took up my entire weekend, so I'm going to just write about it again since I haven't been able to explore any other hot topic social questions like, where do all those missing socks and hair ties end up?

We laugh at Snooki and her Jersey Shore posse as they dump three pounds of bronzer on their faces every time they go out. But are we laughing in disgust, or from experience? Honestly, I don't think these girls are much different from many today who would rather die than go pale. Even among those who are less extreme, bronzer is a key piece in most makeup bags and the tanning salon is at the top of most prom (and Ring Dance) to-do lists.

Members of the Westhampton College Class of 2012 participated in the 2011 Ring Dance ceremony Feb. 5 at the Jefferson Hotel in downtown Richmond. The event had more security than in past years in response to vandalism that occurred at last year's dance.

Contracted police and the Jefferson Hotel's own security guards will strictly enforce regulations at this year's Ring Dance, Westhampton College Deans Juliette Landphair and Kerry Fankhauser said.

This new month signals a time for evaluation. It's a time to work on areas of weakness in preparation for an enhanced performance and product.

The other week I was at an apartment party. Upon arrival, a friend of mine introduced me to an older girl in her sorority. The girl smiled politely and shook my hand. Without asking how I was or where I was from, she proceeded to ask me which sorority I belonged to. After I told her, she said, "Oh, but which sorority did you want to be in?" Puzzled, I walked away wondering why she had asked me that.

It's wet. It's sloppy. It goes down smooth. It turns a handshake into a hug, a hug into a kiss, and a kiss into a "I swear I wasn't aiming for that." Mr. Introvert becomes Mr. Hilarious and Mr. Extrovert becomes Captain Asshole. What is the IT of which I speak?
