• Not only are the New York Jets being investigated by the NFL after a few players made catcalls directed at TV Azteca reporter Ines Sainz while she was waiting to interview quarterback Mark Sanchez Saturday at the Jets' practice facility, but Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis just got slapped on the wrist for his outspoken comments about Sainz. Portis said, "I think you put women reporters in the locker room in position to see guys walking around naked, and you sit in the locker room with 53 guys, and all of a sudden you see a nice woman in the locker room. I think men are going to tend to turn and look and want to say something to that woman." Portis apologized through the Redskins after the league swiftly condemned his comments as inappropriate and offensive. I love Portis, but he can't be that full of himself until he can average more than four yards per carry. I think when you put women reporters in the locker room, they're more concerned about how THEY look on-camera than what the "hottie wit da body" looks like post-practice. Hot, sweaty mess if you ask me.

Dear University of Virginia fans,

As Michael Whitt, a sports historian who works as the special projects assistant at the Virginia Baptist Historical Society, walked down the stairs into the library, he casually mentioned that some of the items in the "UR Football Comes Home" exhibit had belonged to his father.

Get the missing posters ready, our campus is missing important events for the second consecutive year. Hang the signs from every telephone pole, put them on every tack board in every building. Heck, let's start serving milk cartons at D-Hall so we can put the message there as well.

The beginning of senior year brings a lot of lasts, one of them being the Family Weekend football game. This was going to be my first and my last. My freshman year I ended up getting really sick last minute and my parents went without me.

I read with great interest your recent story on the retirement of University of Richmond Police Chief Robert C. Dillard. I have known Chief Dillard both as a student and as an alumni leader. There is no finer Spider than Bob Dillard. He will be greatly missed when he retires this year.

• Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger got dropped from more than just the sexual assault charges from a Georgia college student. A local company that markets food products endorsed by local sports stars dropped Big Ben from its beef jerky sponsorship. As Uncle Frank from "Home Alone" would say, "Look what you did, you little jerk."

When the band strikes up the fight song, "Spider Born and Spider Bred," I can honestly say that I embody that phrase. I have been a Spider fan since I was born: My parents are alumni; I live a hop, skip and a jump away from campus; I was one of those little kids who sled down the hill on cardboard boxes at football games at UR Stadium and who was ecstatic whenever I got a high-five from Spidey.

During the past year, I have written about everything from the opening of new and expensive stadiums, to the lack of Richmond football during Family Weekend, to the transgressions of professional athletes and the demise of Binghamton's basketball program.

Walking to class at 7:30 a.m. can be a pretty solitary experience. It's often cold (especially this winter), and usually the only other humans we see are a few class-goers. Oh, and a lot of athletes, many of whom started their days between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., before the sun got up.
