Wind and rain whipped across the University of Maryland Golf Course as the University of Richmond women’s golf team played in its final regular season tournament April 6 and 7.
The UMD Terp Invitational gave the Spiders one last chance to compete before the Atlantic 10 Championships April 17-19. While the weather laid challenges before the team, an easy course made for softened scores. Richmond cut 42 shots from its last tournament score for a 37-over-par 901, placing them 10th of 14 teams.
For the first time all season, two Spiders recorded red scores in the same tournament as sophomore Maya Beasley and first-year Katie Magner both carded 1-under-par scores on the first day. The under-par was a career first for Magner, she was 2-under leading into her final hole of the round but a bogey set her back.
“There's some difficult holes along the back, where you have to have some really well placed tee shots, 15 and 18 specifically, because that fairway is really narrow,” Magner said after the tournament.
Magners’ parents were able to watch her milestone from the cartpath, silently cheering her on.
Beasley’s 4-over-par first round combined with her 1-under-par second round put her in 20th on the individual leaderboard, with Magner right behind her after she shot a 5-over-par second round.
Junior Olivia Wilkie and first-year Caroline Thompson trailed with rankings of 38th and 48th. Senior Lauren Jones shot a season-best 1-over-par 73 in the recond round, but an 81 set her back on the leaderboard.
The Spiders headed home for the night sitting in eighth place.
The third round proved to be less fruitful for the Spiders as they teed off the next morning. Jones brunette the worst of it, facing major issues on the front nine, recording seven straight holes over-par. She added 13 shots to her score from round two, dooming her to 73rd place.
Beasley led the team with an even-par round that locked her into 11th place overall. She started the day with a bogey, but righted herself the next hole with a birdie. Swapping under and over holes later in the round, put her right at par.
“She actually struggled seeing some putts go in her first round, and then in the beginning of her second round, started seeing a few go in,” Head Coach Calle Barlow said after the tournament. “That gave her a lot of confidence.”
Matching her second round score, Magner carded another 5-over-par for 30th place. As a team, Richmond places 10th, just two shots behind the teams tied for eighth place.

Only one tournament remains for Richmond: The A-10 Championships April 17-19 in Orlando, Fla.
“We’re just gonna keep building confidence and working on some small things,” Barlow said. “We’ll be ready.”
