The University of Richmond women’s lacrosse team is 2-0 for the season following a 15-8 victory over Queens University of Charlotte in its home opener on Feb. 15.

The Spiders continued their win streak after toppling No. 19 Penn State on Feb. 8 in their first game of the season. The Royals, however, fell to 0-2.

First-year attacker Stella Axe’s first career goal opened the first quarter and led the Spiders into a 4-0 run. UR would work to maintain the advantage for the remainder of the contest. The Royals finally found the back of the net with one minute on the clock, bringing the score to 4-1. The Spiders immediately answered with back-to-back goals within 24 seconds of each other.

Sophomore Bridget Lonsinger started the second quarter with a free position goal, her first of the season. The Royals and Spiders swapped points for the remainder of the half, leaving the score at 10-3.

Dominating the third quarter, UR did not allow a single goal from the Royals. After scoring three goals, UR had a healthy 13-3 lead.

The Spiders were challenged in the final quarter when the QUC managed a four goal run, inching the score gap smaller. UR nudged back, scoring two goals of its own in the last minutes of the game. In one last push, the Royals scored a goal, putting the last point on the board. Despite their effort, the final score came out to 15-8 in favor of the Spiders.

Junior Attacker Alexis Morton paced the Spiders with four goals and two assists. Senior attacker Colleen Quinn followed with 3 goals and two assists.

UR’s defense also showed a strong performance. Sophomore goalkeeper Abby Francioli picked up seven saves in just 45 minutes of play.

Up next, the Spiders will face the Naval Academy in their first Wednesday game of the season. UR has never won against the Navy, suffering a 0-3 record. Last season, the Spiders lost 14-5.

The Midshipmen and Spiders are both 2-0 for the season, and the Navy is fresh off a close 17-16 win over Villanova University. The two teams will be looking to extend their perfect season.

UR and The Naval Academy will meet each other at the Robins Stadium at 2 p.m. on Feb. 19.
