University of Richmond students are mourning the loss of classmate and friend Christopher Elvin after authorities said he apparently drowned Thursday night.

The City of Richmond Police Department detectives determined that the incident was an accidental drowning. No foul play is suspected at this time, according to Phon Hoonsan, an RPD public information officer. 

Elvin was a sophomore business administration major pursuing a minor in Chinese studies from Newark, New Jersey, according to a statement from UR President Kevin Hallock on Friday morning. 

“It is with deep sadness that I write to inform our University community that Christopher Elvin died unexpectedly yesterday,” Hallock wrote. “I have been in touch with Christopher’s family to express our deepest condolences on behalf of the entire University.”

Henrico County and Richmond City police arrived on scene around 9:30 p.m. Thursday with at least two rescue boats in the lake. The Richmond Water Rescue Team was also searching in the water and recovered his body shortly after arriving on scene. 

The Richmond Police Major Crimes Unit is still investigating. The University and police officials do not have any more information at this time.
