With the first week of classes under our belts, it’s a great time to get back involved in events on campus and in the Richmond community. Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and there are several events on and off campus to honor MLK. Here are some related events going on this week as well as additional activities to look out for. 

Attend a community conversation part of UR’s Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration 2022, tune into a broadcast special or even take a walk to spark curiosity and reflection. 

44th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Leaders Celebration

Monday at 9 a.m.

A broadcast special produced by Virginia Union University will be airing on CBS 6. This special will highlight MLK’s impact both nationally and locally, and feature leaders in the Greater Richmond and Hampton Roads regions. 

Walk around Westhampton Lake

Monday-Friday

To celebrate and honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Westhampton Lake trail has a series of panels along its pathway. The panels display powerful words spoken by MLK. This convenient and pandemic-friendly activity is open to anyone and is a rewarding way to spend your day off and commemorate the celebration of MLK. The panels will be up until Jan. 21. 

Institutional History 

Monday from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. 

The Bonner Center for Civic Engagement is organizing a conversation with History Professor Lauranett Lee and a group of her students. They will lead a discussion examining the ways in which institutions are bringing to light their past history. This event will take place in the Jepson Faculty Lounge with snacks provided and you can register here

Creating a Culture of Consent

Monday 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Kaylin Tingle, healthy relationships and violence prevention educator, and select UR students will be leading a conversation on consent. The conversation will delve into how to contribute to a climate of consent and ways to reduce the risk for violence and sexual assault. The event will be held at Whitehurst Hall with a provided lunch. Register here to attend the event. 

Respecting All Faiths 

Monday from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Josh Jeffreys, Jewish Chaplain and director of religious life in the office of the chaplaincy, will lead a conversation on the underrepresented religious communities on campus and how to support them. Register here to attend the discussion at Westhampton Deanery. Lunch will be provided. 

Mindful on Life: Embodying Self and Collective Care 

Thursday 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Is the first full week of classes already overwhelming? Attend a self-care discussion to learn effective strategies to manage stress. The Bonner Center for Civic Engagement is organizing a discussion on the importance of self-care, featuring Ashley Williams, founder and owner of BareSOUL Yoga. The workshop will be interactive and allow participants to learn different tools to take care of the mind, body and heart. The session will be held at the Well-Being Center and you can register here
