Men's lacrosse lost third game to Duke 6-13

The men’s lacrosse team lost its third game to No. 1 Duke 6-13 moving them to 1-3 on the season.

UR closes out its four-game non-conference home stretch and will begin conference play next week.

In the first period, the Blue Devils scored four goals in just 7:30 of play taking an early 4-0 lead. 

With 7:05 left, senior attacker Ryan Lanchbury scored the Spiders goal making it 4-1. Neither team would score for the remainder of the quarter.

At the start of the second, Duke answered UR’s late first-period goal with one of its own making it a 5-1 game at the 11:54 mark. 

Eight seconds later, Lanchbury scored URs second goal of the game making it a three-point deficit. 

Graduate student midfielder Tyler Shoults put the Spiders within two after scoring his second goal of the season and making it a 5-3 game. 

The Blue Devils went on a 4-0 scoring run in 3:38 of play, extending their lead by six.

When the second quarter concluded, the Blue Devils held a 9-3 lead. 

The first five minutes of the third period went scoreless for both sides. At the 9:11 mark, Duke put another goal on the board making it a 10-3 lead.

With 5:18 left in the third, the Blue Devils scored another goal, taking an 11-3 lead. 

The Spiders responded with a goal of their own by first-year attacker Lance Madonna making it 11-4.

UR trailed by seven with fifteen minutes to go.

Lanchbury scored his third goal of the game and his sixth of the season at the 11:31 mark but Duke managed to add another goal to its books 2:33 later and the Blue Devils were still up by seven.

Redshirt first-year midfielder Matt Civitella scored his first goal of the season and the Spiders were down by six with 3:11 to play. 

Duke scored with 42 seconds left on the clock and with that the Blue Devils won the game 13-6.

Lanchbury scored his 100th career goal becoming just the third Spider to reach that mark. 

The Spiders committed just eleven turnovers and picked up twenty-three ground balls. 

UR went 11-23 in face-offs and made six of its thirty-nine shot attempts.

The Spiders look to win their second game of the season and first of Southern Conference play as they face off against the Virginia Military Institute at noon on March 13.
