“Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.” — Allen Ginsberg, from Ginsberg, A Biography.
Right now, is no better time to launch a new column to The Collegian, “Life in Verse." I will choose a poem to be featured once a week in The Collegian over the next year from the students of the University of Richmond. I thought about how life feels chaotic (even more so now) and how, on Sunday mornings a poem can create a small time for reflection and thought. Poetry means to probe, to open reflection and discussion, and it often causes deep introspection.
“Poetry is emotion put into measure. The emotion must come by nature, but the measure can be acquired by art.” — Thomas Hardy.
Poetry has no bounds or limitations and it is art being put into the written word. Poetry is boundless. It is wonderful to have the opportunity to put poems in front of people.
