Men’s Basketball
Jan. 28: Loss 68-87 at Virginia Commonwealth University
The Spiders were tied with the Rams at halftime, but struggled in the second half. Despite redshirt junior Grant Golden’s 24 points, the Spiders were unable to earn a win at the Lumber Liquidators Capital City Classic in the Siegel Center. Junior Nathan Cayo added 13 points as well.
Feb. 1: Win 76-54 vs. George Washington University
The team bounced back from two consecutive Atlantic-10 losses with a comfortable win over George Washington. Golden was the game's leading scorer with 20 points, his 26th 20-point game of his career. The Spiders had three other players score in double digits with redshirt junior Nick Sherod adding 15 points, first-year Tyler Burton with 12 points and Cayo accruing 10. The Spiders scored 22 points from 18 Colonials turnovers, including four steals each from junior Jacob Gilyard and Sherod. After Saturday night’s nine assists, Gilyard now totals 415 in his career, officially ranking him fourth in Richmond history and passing Kevin Anderson’s 410 assists.
Women’s Basketball
Jan 29: Loss 50-64 at University of Massachusetts Amherst
The Spiders suffered an A-10 loss on the road in a tough game against UMass. However, sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz contributed 15 points to the Spiders, and was 4-for-8 from the three-point line. Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke recorded a career-high five assists. Facing a seven-point deficit going into the third quarter, the Spiders were unable to catch up with the Minutewomen.
Feb 2: Win 63-59 vs. St. Bonaventure University
Richmond defeated St. Bonaventure 63-59 in overtime at the Robins Center, with Hinds-Clarke scoring the game-winning layup with 11 seconds left in overtime. Sophomore Claire Holt led the team with 15 points. The Spiders improved to 10-12 overall and 3-5 in conference play with the victory.
Women’s Tennis
Jan 30: Loss 0-7 at University of Virginia

The women’s tennis team lost on the road against No. 11 UVA. UVA secured the victory after 35th ranked Rosie Johanson won in straight sets against senior Dessi Zlateva in the No. 2 singles match. Richmond lost all six singles matches and all three doubles matches.
Feb 1: Win 4-3 vs. Davidson College
Richmond had a long day of play as it battled A-10 competitor Davidson at home. The two teams split the six singles matches, each winning three, but the Spiders secured the doubles point to come out with a 4-3 win. They won the doubles point after sweeping all three matches, including a 6-1 win by senior Lea Owens and first-year Andrea Campodonico. Sophomore Helene Heiberg took control of the No. 5 singles match after being tied 3-3 against Davidson’s Mira Gladstone, breaking her opponent's serve in the final set to win the match 6-3.
Men’s Tennis
Jan 29: Loss 1-6 at Virginia Commonwealth University
Men’s tennis suffered a loss on the road to rival VCU, losing 6-1. In the last doubles match, senior Matt Fernandez and sophomore Josh Keitelman trailed VCU’s Lleyton Cronje and David Cierny at No. 1 doubles 5-6 in an unfinished match. The Spiders lost the No. 3 singles in straight sets and lost 6-4, 6-4 in No. 1 singles. Senior George Lovitt secured Richmond's lone point with a win in straight sets against Cierny going 6-4 and 6-4 in No. 4 singles.
Feb 2: Win 7-0 vs. Hampton University
The men’s tennis team bounced back with a 7-0 sweep over Hampton at home. Fernandez was one of the top performers winning in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-0, in No. 1 singles. Fernandez and Keitelman also won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles against Hampton’s Cliff Dwyer and Matthew Foster Estwick. In the last match of the day, sophomore John Walsh won a series of tiebreakers in No. 3 singles to complete the sweep. Men’s tennis begins conference play at Dayton on February 7.
Women’s Track and Field
Jan 31-Feb 1: Penn State National Invitational, University Park, Pennsylvania
The women’s track and field team competed at the Penn State National Invitation on Friday and Saturday against some of the best teams in the country. The first-year class showed out with top finishes including Anna George who finished third in the one-mile race with a lifetime best of 4:57.08. First-year Lily Snow shaved 17 seconds off her personal best in the 3,000-meter invitational race, finishing sixth. Junior Caroline Robelen came out on top in the one-mile with a season-best of 4:56.61. Senior Claire Brown just missed a first-place finish in the one-mile invitational race, finishing second with a season-best 4:53.42. In sprinting competitions, first-year Gabrielle Beneducci finished the 400-meter race with a personal-best 59.00. The women’s track and field team returns to competition this Friday and Saturday at the Camel City Open in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, at the JDL Track.
