Spider Sports Recap: Week of Feb. 3

Women’s Basketball 

February 5: Loss 42-57 vs. VCU 

The Spiders lost their home game against crosstown rival VCU 57-42. Sophomore Claire Holt led UR with 16 points and senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke added eight points while becoming the 25th member of the 1,000 career points club. Richmond fell to 10-13 overall with a 3-6 record against Atlantic 10 teams. 

February 9: Win 67-61 at La Salle 

The Spiders rebounded from a loss earlier in the week to win a big game on the road against an A-10 conference foe. Holt led the team with 20 points, while Hinds-Clarke added 12 points to go along with 11 rebounds. The Spider defense forced 18 turnovers and 12 steals in a strong defensive effort. With the win, Richmond improved to 11-13 overall with a 4-6 record in the A-10. 

Women’s Track and Field 

February 7-8: Camel City Invitational, Winston-Salem, North Carolina 

First-year Kamryn Ross led the way for the Spiders, setting a UR program record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.72 to advance to the finals, where she finished sixth overall. Senior Maria Acosta performed very well in the 800-meter run, leading all collegiate runners with a time of 2:09.10. First-year Kayla O’Connell turned in a personal best time of 1:39.75 in the 600-meter dash, finishing second overall. 

Men’s Tennis

February 7: Win 5-2 at Duquesne 

The Spiders dominated the doubles matches in Pittsburgh, winning all three, in addition to four of the six singles matches. Senior George Lovitt and sophomore John Walsh won their match 6-3, senior Klein Evans and sophomore Campbell Erwin won theirs 7-5, and sophomore Josh Keitelman and senior Matt Fernandez also earned the victory 6-3. First-year Ricky Bell won his singles match 6-1, 6-4, while Evans, Walsh, and Erwin were also victorious in their singles matches.

February 7: Win 7-0 at Hampton

The Spiders dominated Hampton, earning a 7-0 sweep while losing just one set in six matches. Seniors Kiana Marshall and Lyndell Giffenig won their doubles match, as did the pair of sophomore Helene Heiberg and first-year Marta Buendia. Junior Emily Dunbar and first-year Andrea Campodonico also won their doubles match. The Spiders defeated Hampton in all six singles matches.  

Men’s Lacrosse

February 8: Loss 14-13 (2OT) vs Maryland

Starting the season against the No. 4 ranked team in the nation, the Spiders lost a hard-fought game in double overtime. Junior Mitch Savoca and first-year Richie Connell each scored three goals, while senior Sean Menges led the team’s defensive effort with six caused turnovers. Junior Brett Reid recorded a career-high 10 ground balls, good for the third-most in a single game in program history. 

Men’s Basketball 

February 8: Win 59-53 at Fordham 

The Spider basketball team defeated their A-10 conference foe Fordham in New York behind 40 combined points from junior Jacob Gilyard and redshirt junior Blake Francis. The team as a whole struggled offensively, shooting just 36.7% from the field, but played stellar defense and held on to win. The team improves to 17-6 on the season, its best record through 23 games since the 2010-2011 season. 

Women’s Lacrosse

February 9: Win 20-6 at Longwood 

With a resounding 20-6 win on the road, the Spiders women’s lacrosse team started off its season strong. Junior Nicole Concannon, redshirt junior Sam Geiersbach and first-year Arden Tierney all tallied three goals in the victory. Eight other players scored goals for the Spiders in a complete team effort. Senior goalie Megan Gianforte recorded the win with five saves and three ground balls.
