Spider Sports Recap: Week of Sept. 9

Women’s Golf

Sept. 8-9: Kingsmill Invitational, Williamsburg, Virginia

Sophomore Emily Ward helped the Spiders move up three spots on the leaderboard in the final round to finish tied for fifth place out of 10 teams. Ward finished tied for 10th, her second top-10 finish at UR, with an even-par 72 in the final round. After scoring 25 over par in the first round Sunday morning, the Spiders scored 27 over par combined in rounds two and three, tying with the College of William & Mary for the best of any school over those two rounds.

Sept. 14-15: Bucknell Invitational, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania 

The Spiders were tied for fourth after the first two rounds but finished in sixth place out of nine teams with a score of 918 (+78). First-year Vicky Zhu finished tied for ninth out of 61 competitors, in the first top-10 finish of her UR career.

Women’s Soccer

Sept. 11: Win 5-0 at Hampton University

On Wednesday, UR defeated Hampton in a 5-0 shutout. For the first time in five years, UR’s women’s soccer team scored five goals in a single game. There were 17 combined fouls, 10 called on Hampton and seven called on the Spiders. Junior Katie Tritt had two goals. First-year Nora Santelli, first-year Molly Wierman and sophomore Molly Morgan each scored her first goal of the season.

Sept. 15: Draw 3-3 at Coastal Carolina University

Redshirt junior Alyssa Walker scored two goals, including the game-tying goal in the 79th minute. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Jessica Stanfill recorded a season-high eight saves. Coastal Carolina had 11 of 19 shots on goal and the Spiders finished with nine of 17 shots on net.

Men’s Cross Country

Sept. 13: Mason Invitational, Leesburg, Virginia

The Spiders finished second place overall in the eight-kilometer race. Senior Miles Clikeman finished in first place with a time of 25 minutes, 31.4 seconds.

Women’s Cross Country

Sept. 13: Mason Invitational, Leesburg, Virginia

The UR team took first place in the seven-team five-kilometer race. First-year Kate Dickow finished third place, recording a time of 18:33.5.

Men’s Tennis

Sept. 13-15: Liberty Invitational, Lynchburg, Virginia

The Spiders won six of eight singles matches and two of three doubles matches on the first day of the tournament. Over the three days, seniors George Lovitt, Matt Fernandez and Klein Evans combined to go 9-3 in singles matches. Lovitt won the White Draw, winning all four of his singles matches. 

Women’s Tennis

Sept. 13-15: Bedford Cup, College Park, Maryland

Sophomore Helene Heiberg and first-year Justine Bryson won three straight matches to win their doubles flight. Seniors Lea Owens and Dessi Zlateva won their first two doubles matches in their flight against pairs from Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Maryland before falling in the final.

Field Hockey

Sept. 13: Win 4-2 at Lehigh University

After Lehigh scored a goal less than three minutes into the game, senior Amanda DaSilva scored her first goal of the season to tie the game at 1 in the first quarter. The Mountain Hawks scored again to make the score 2-1 before senior Jessica Loos scored a game-tying goal in the third quarter. In the final quarter, senior Elise Zwicklbauer scored two goals, both assisted by first-year Lindsey Frank, to give UR the 4-2 victory. 

Sept. 15: Loss 1-2 at Lafayette College

Sophomore Steffie Bongers scored a game-tying goal, but UR lost to Lafayette in overtime. The Spiders outshot the Leopards 11-5, but Lafayette senior goalie Sarah Park recorded seven saves in the contest.

Football

Sept. 14: Loss 20-42 vs. Elon University

UR fell behind 14-0 and was losing 28-7 by halftime. Graduate transfer Keyston Fuller finished with seven catches for 208 receiving yards, a new career high. The 208 receiving yards in a single game ties former Spider Leland Melvin for the fourth most in school history. UR had 421 yards of total offense compared with Elon’s 384, but the Phoenix were an astounding 12 of 16 on third-down conversions.
