The University of Richmond club swimming team hosted its first meet on campus against Virginia Commonwealth University in the Capital Cup on Nov. 17.

This year was the third annual Capital Cup between VCU and UR. Teams for club men's and women’s soccer, men’s rugby, women’s volleyball, tennis, women’s ultimate, field hockey, men's and women’s lacrosse and water polo also competed in the Capital Cup, according to a club sports email.

The club swimming team is composed of about 20 swimmers and had around 12 compete in the meet, Kendall Crispin, a co-president of the team, said.

Crispin and her other co-presidents corresponded with members of the VCU club swimming team to determine which events to have, she said.

“We ended up losing due to the large amount of boys VCU had, and our lack of boys,” Crispin said about the results of the meet.

VCU had about 30 swimmers, Crispin said.

The meet had a 200-meter medley relay, 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter backstroke, 100-meter breaststroke, 50-meter butterfly, 50-meter breaststroke, 100-meter freestyle, 50-meter backstroke, 100-meter butterfly, 200-meter freestyle medley, 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter individual medley.

“When you finished a race, you would get out and time the next race in your lane,” Rebecca Bivens, a member of the club swimming team, said. “When we host again, it would be really beneficial to recruit some students, or others not competing, as assigned timers throughout the whole meet.”

The team started in the spring 2018 semester. It tried to host a meet last semester, but pool time was limited because of the varsity swimming team and the club water polo team also needing the space, Crispin said.

Club swimming is not hosting any more home meets this semester, but hopes to next semester when it begins to receive funding, Crispin said.

“We had a lot of fans come and support us, and it was awesome to see the club's hard work pay off,” she said.
