Ice cream round up: Richmond's hottest ice cream spots

Still screaming for ice cream? The heat might be gone, but ice cream is a year round staple. Richmond has many great ice-cream spots, and here are the top five that you must try:

1) Kilwins Richmond is located close to campus on Cary Street. In addition to serving amazing ice cream, it also sells fudge, caramel apples, specialty chocolates, toffees and caramels. One of Kilwins' most popular ice cream flavors is toasted coconut.

“Kilwins is creamier than most all of the other brands out there," manager Jackie Mayfield said. "Recipes are tweaked every year, so they are always the best. We are excited to finally bring our homemade recipes to Richmond. Come by to try our delicious seasonal flavors are also in: The Perfect Apple Pie has pie crust and chunks of apples and the Pumpkin Pie with chunks of pie crust and pumpkin.”

Sophomore Davis Kline said that Kilwins was the creamiest ice cream he has ever had.

2) Bev’s Homemade Ice Cream, also located on Cary Street, is a great place to stop for a yummy treat. The two customer favorites are espresso brownie and raspberry chocolate chip. Bev's also serves coffee and a variety of milkshakes.

“I’m a big fan [of Bev’s]," senior Thomas Henry said. "The espresso Oreo is to die for, and [I] love to buy local.”

3) Boyer’s ice cream is loved by many UR students. With over 20 delicious flavors, you can’t go wrong.

“Boyer’s is my favorite because there are so many different flavors and every one that I’ve tried has been equally as good,” senior Christina Lee said.

In addition to ice cream, Boyer’s also has sorbet, ice cream sandwiches, milkshakes, coffee and breakfast sandwiches. Don’t miss the “Just Ask” flavor, which consists of white chocolate ice cream with Oreo pieces and peanut butter.

4) Scoop RVA is tucked away on Strawberry Street in Carytown. Its adorable atmosphere and yummy ice cream make it an ideal spot for a tasty snack.

One of its most popular flavors is the brown sugar cookie dough, which is a delightful mix of cookie dough chunks with a unique addition of brown sugar, which gives it a sweet and salty taste. For all the ice cream lovers who just can’t get enough, Scoop offers a unique “Pint Club” membership, in which members can pick up three pints of ice cream at the beginning of each month.

The store also has specialty profiterole sundaes and scrumptious frozen already-made cookies from Whisk Bakery to take home and bake yourself!

5) Charm School is a contemporary-style ice cream boutique located in downtown Richmond. The ice cream is all made in-house at Charm School. One of the store's most popular flavors is birthday cake, but it is seasonal. According to Charm School's website, its dairy is minimally processed and non-GMO, from grass-fed cows. For vegans, the store also offers a variety of vegan ice creams and treats, including sorbet.

Senior Emma Gorman appreciates the store's vegan options, she said.

“I like Charm School because they have a lot of vegan options, and because I don’t really eat dairy, it was nice that I could still have good ice cream,” she said.

Charm School also makes its cones in-house from scratch every day. Charm School’s specialty toppings include magic shell, toasted fluff and vegan fluff. Check out its Twitter, @CharmSchoolRVA, for updates about its latest flavors!
