In The Know is a weekly brief that highlights events and happenings around University of Richmond

MakerSpace in Tyler Haynes Commons

The stage located in the Tyler Haynes Commons will be turned into an active makerspace on Tuesday, Feb. 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Makerspaces are community centers with tools which combine manufacturing equipment, community and education in order to allow community members to design, prototype and create manufactured works, according to makerspace.com.

During this event students can create music synthesizers, miniature 3D sculptures, scan their heads in 3D and learn more about 3D printing. There will be Legos, soft circuits, embroidery, hyperbolic crochet and more. Free cookies and brownies will also be provided for those that attend.

Rape Aggression Defense, or R.A.D., is a 12-hour long basic self-defense class for women. The class will be held on Saturday, March 19 and Saturday, March 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The first three hours of the course are discussion and lecture in a classroom, followed by six hours of learning physical techniques and ending with three hours of simulations with certified R.A.D. “aggressors” to practice learned techniques, which is optional.

The event is open to all female faculty, staff and students of all skill levels, physical abilities and backgrounds. There is a $10 reservation fee which will be refunded after completion. Those interested can sign up here.

“A Place at the Table” screening

The documentary film, “A Place at the Table,” will be screened Thursday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. in the Westhampton Deanery Living Room. “A Place at the Table” shows the economic, social and cultural implications of hunger in our nation and argues that this problem can be fixed if the American public decides that making healthy foods available and affordable is necessary.

The screening is sponsored by Students for Educational Equality (SEE), the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) and the Food Recovery Network. This event is open to all RC and WC students and free snacks will be provided.
