In The Know: Trick or Treat Street, several Greek philanthropy events, and more

Music Department and Arts and Sciences concert to celebrate new piano

In celebration of the department’s Hamburg Steinway Concert Grand piano, there will be a concert Tuesday, Oct. 20th from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the Camp Concert Hall. Last December a group of faculty members from the Music Department traveled to Hamburg Germany to select the piano.

“For more than a century and a half, the world’s most accomplished pianists have preferred to express their musical genius on Steinway & Sons pianos,” according to steinway.com. “Today, more than 98 percent of the world’s active concert pianists choose to perform on Steinway pianos.”

The event is free and open to the public.

Civil Rights leader donates permeant collection to Boatwright Memorial Library

Wyatt Tee Walker, a distinguished theologian and civil rights leader, gifted his personal collection, which includes historical pieces, papers, recorded sermons and memorabilia, to Boatwright Library. His donated collection, which will be the largest held by the library, includes photographs of King while they were jailed in Birmingham in 1967, numerous letters to King and other books, awards and clothing.

Walker, who lives in Virginia, was chief of staff to Martin Luther King Jr., executive director of the Southern Leadership Conference and special assistant for Urban Affairs to Nelson Rockefeller. He is a specialist in sacred music, cultural historian, and a prolific author as well as pastor emeritus of Canaan Baptist Church of Christ Harlem.

The collection is expected to be available for research in late 2016 in the Galvin Rare Books Room.

The winner will receive a Y-lot parking pass for a week, courtesy of Parking Services. The ‘Y’ pass is valid in the student parking lots, unlimited parking in the 15-minute spaces on Richmond Way at the Commons, and unlimited parking on Keller Road. If the winner does not have a car registered on campus, there will be an alternative prize.

“Addictions Old and New” conference history conference

The Douglas Southall Freeman two-day Conference “Addictions Old and New” will be held October 22-23. The Keynote address, “What is Addiction and What Do Addictions Have in Common?” will be presented by Charles O’Brien from University of Pennsylvania, Thursday, Oct. 22nd at 7:30 p.m. in the Alice Haynes Room in the Tyler Haynes Commons. Registration is required.

The second set of sessions and presentations will be held Friday, Oct. 23 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Jepson Hall room 118. No registration is required for the second day.

Ayers leading a historic trip to Monticello

As a part of the series, Passport to American History, The Bonner Center for Civic Engagement and the Office of International Education will host a trip to Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson on Saturday, October 24. The trip will be led by Dr. Edward Ayers, American history professor and president emeritus.

Trick or Treat Street

The 17th annual “Trick or Treat Street” is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 25th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Westhampton Green. This free community-wide service event encourages local families and community members to enjoy food from the Firehouse BBQ food truck, a bounce house and other activities including straw mazes, which is all presented by costuming-wearing students.

Hundreds of children attend the event every year, and guests are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items or make a monetary donation to FeedMore, a local Richmond food bank.

Greek events to keep in mind this week

Tuesday, Oct. 20: Delta Delta Delta is hosting a Body Image Panel from 7-8 p.m. (Location TBD).

Thursday, Oct. 22: Alpha Kappa Alpha will hold a BRAvo bra decorating event in the pier from 7-8:45 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 23: Sigma Phi Epsilon is hosting a bubble ball and petting zoo philanthropy event from 3-6 p.m. on the River Roads Fields. Wondering about bubble ball? Click here to watch a video on it.

Saturday, Oct. 24: Delta Sigma Theta is hosting a Lupus 5K walk/run at 9 a.m. at the gazebo.

Delta Delta Delta is hosting DHOP from 11-2 p.m. in the Cottage Courtyard.
