In the Know: A Non-UCI Road World Champonships Edition

In The Know is a weekly brief that highlights events and happenings around University of Richmond.

The UCI Road World Championships are, of course, the main event happening at Richmond this week. Still, there are plenty of other non-cycling happenings worth checking out:

Luncheon with David Gardner of The Motley Fool

David Gardner, Jepson’s 2015-16 Leader-in-Residence and co-founder and chief rule breaker at The Motley Fool, will be at a luncheon at Jepson Hall’s Faculty Lounge Thursday, Sept. 24 at 12 p.m. Gardner co-founded “The Fool” with his brother in 1993 and in 2014 and 2015 The Motley Fool was named the “#1 Medium-Sized Company to Work For” by Glassdoor.com. The luncheon is free but the space is limited so interested students must register online as soon as possible.

Interview with Virginia’s Former Executioner Jerry Givens

As Virginia’s state executioner from 1982 to 1999, Jerry Givens put 62 prisoners to death. Givens will be interviewed Thursday, Sept. 24 from 5:00-6:30 p.m., at the Gottwald Science Center’s auditorium to talk about the death penalty, America’s criminal justice system and his own experiences as an executioner. Following the interview there will be a reception in the Gottwald Atrium. The event is sponsored by the University of Richmond School of Law and One Book, One Richmond.

New York University professor presents 9/11 lecture

Marita Sturken, a New York University professor, will present the lecture, “The Objects That Live: The 9/11 Memorial and Museum,” Thursday, Sept. 24 at 4:30-6 p.m. in the Carole Weinstein International Center Commons. Sturken’s work at New York University focuses on the relationship of cultural memory to national identity and issues of visual culture, according to nyu.edu. The event is being hosted by the American Studies program.

Movie screening as part of Masculinity@Richmond program

“The Mask You Live In,” will be screened Thursday, Sept. 24 from 6-8 p.m. in Jepson 118 as part of Richmond College Dean Joe Boehman’s Masculinity@Richmond program. The film examines the role of the American ideal of masculinity and its effects on both men and women.
