URPD to step up speed enforcement on Boatwright Drive

After URPD noticed excessive speeding on Boatwright Drive over a three-day period, it decided it would begin issuing tickets at more frequent rate.

During a three-day period last week, University of Richmond Police stopped 80 drivers on Boatwright Drive for speeding in excess of 10 mph in an area with seven pedestrian crossings, according to an email University of Richmond faculty and staff received Tuesday morning.

Although the drivers were initially let off with warnings last week, URPD will begin enforcing the speed limit by issuing tickets from the B-6 parking lot to the campus entrance. The speed enforcement will span from April 1 to the 3, according to the email.

Complaints by pedestrians were one of the main reasons URPD chose to enforce the speed limit in this way, Beth Simonds, assistant chief of police, said.

“We’re trying to be very transparent,” Simonds said. “The idea is to get people to drive the speed limit, not to write traffic tickets.”

Students will be sent the same email at 9 p.m. tonight, David McCoy, chief of police said.

“We figured that at night time, not too late, but at night time, people would be around a little bit more,” McCoy said.
