Two basketball players will transfer

Richmond coach Chris Mooney announced yesterday that two freshmen basketball players, Kadeem Smithen and Chandler Diekvoss, are transferring to different schools.

"Kadeem and Chandler are outstanding teammates and were great members of our team,” Mooney wrote in an email. “They will both be extremely successful in their athletic careers and beyond."

Smithen, a 6-foot-3-inch guard from Ajax, Ontario, played sparingly this season, scoring 11 points along with eight rebounds and five assists. He played in 23 of the Spiders’ games, averaging 3.6 minutes per game.

Diekvoss, a 6-foot-6-inch forward from De Pere, Wisconsin, practiced with the team, but didn’t appear in any games, using his freshman year to redshirt.

It’s currently unclear where Smithen and Diekvoss are heading next year, but other schools are able to contact and recruit them now. Mooney believes this process will take about a month.
