Richmond basketball’s Genevieve Okoro scored her 1000th career point Nov. 27 against Central Michigan in the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout.
Okoro, a senior, reached the milestone early in the first half after scoring her fourth point of the game on a quick turnaround jumper in the post. “Watching Gen achieve such a milestone has been an honor,” head coach Michael Shafer said. “Gen has always been a very humble, hard-working player.”
Okoro is now the 21st player to score 1000 points for the Spiders’ women's basketball team. “It’s exciting to have reached it,” Okoro said. “I didn’t put emphasis on the goal, but it’s nice to have it.”
Okoro will receive a 1000-point ball for her accomplishment, Shafer said. She is focused on winning an A-10 championship, but she said she would also like to reach 1000 rebounds by the end of the season. She is about 200 rebounds shy of her goal.
The Spiders’ next game will be against Hampton on Saturday at the Robins Center.
