SpiderBoard organized an event for students to take an amateur painting class as a way to de-stress leading up to finals.
Junior Allison Yun and sophomore Brady Diaz-Barriga, members of the Lecture, Entertainment, Arts and Diversity Committee within SpiderBoard, organized the painting class through Spirited Art.
Spirited Art is a company that organizes painting class for amateurs to have fun while learning the basics of acrylic painting. A University of Richmond alumnus owns the studio in Richmond. The company provided the painting materials and guided students last night.
“We actually had this event two years ago, my freshman year,” Yun said. “SpiderBoard, that was then CAB, Campus Activities Board, organized this class, because someone who actually went here worked there, so she brought the idea.”
The masterpiece that was reproduced was “Starry Night Over the Rhone” by Vincent van Gogh in 1888. SpiderBoard and Spirited Art chose this painting because of its simplicity. The painting consists of different shades of blue and yellow, portraying a dark night with stars over the French city of Arles.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for students to express their artistic side and have a nice time to get to know each other,” senior Rosario Ferrari said.
Senior Sol Park hadn’t taken any painting classes for a while. “It’s this time of the year that you get really stressed out, and it’s a really good way to de-stress and relax," she said.
Thirty-eight people participated in the event yesterday in the Tyler Haynes Commons. The floor was covered with blue tarps, and there was a canvas, a brush and paint for every student.
SpiderBoard covered the $30 fee per student from Spirited Art.
