Delta Gamma hosts first Anchor Cup to support Service for Sight

Delta Gamma hosted its first soccer tournament, Anchor Cup, to support its national philanthropy, Service for Sight.

Kim Waters, Delta Gamma’s vice president foundation, said the event was as an alternative philanthropy event to their Richmond Regatta, which was cancelled earlier this fall because of safety concerns with Westhampton Lake.

The five-on-five, single-elimination tournament was held at the intramural fields, and thirteen teams participated. The tournament featured a female bracket and co-ed bracket, which included a variety of Greek organizations as well as other campus organizations.

The winners of the tournament were the Fab 5, members of the women’s soccer team, for the female bracket and Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity for the co-ed bracket. Each winner received a $10 gift certificate to a variety of local Richmond establishments and each participant received a free Anchor Cup koozie, said Waters.

“DG did such a great job organizing the event. The hot chocolate was delicious and the koozies they gave out were really cute,” said Carolyn Floersheimer, a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma’s team.

The event raised $800 and all proceeds from the event will go directly to Service for Sight. Teams registered for $30 and additional funds were raised through raffles and cocoa sales. Each raffle ticket cost $2 and included prizes such as a Vineyard Vines tote bag, Oakley sunglasses, Y-lot parking passes, a gift certificate for Shop Konfetti and a gift card to Pearl’s Cupcake Shoppe.

“I think it went really well for a first-time event that was planned last minute. We had a lot of teams sign up, with even some additions today, and everyone seems really excited about it,” said Katy Norfleet, a member of Delta Gamma and the president of Panhellenic Council.
