Richmond Spiders beat Appalachian State, 8-1

The women's field hockey team dominated Appalachian State University on Saturday in a game that finished with a score of 8-1.

The Appalachian State Mountaineers (2-8) were held to just six shots in their visit to University of Richmond.

After starting the season on a four-game losing streak, the Spiders have won six of their last seven games, putting them at 6-5 on the season.

The Spiders came out of the gate hot and got ahead 5-0 just before halftime. junior midfielder Rebecca Barry had a goal and three assists and senior Chelsea Davies had two goals and an assist.

"We were able to put in some better structure on attack that we've been really looking to add," head coach Gina Lucida said.

Lucida seemed very pleased about the fact that her girls were able to keep possession for a majority of the game.

Seven different players scored for the Spiders, and every field player was able to play.

Barry went down eight minutes into the second half. After getting helped off the field, the Limerick, Ireland native had her ankle taped and was unable to play. Barry has been an essential part of the team, having started 10 of the 11 games this season and scoring seven goals and recording five assists. Barry was second team All-American in 2012.

"With a player of Rebecca's caliber," Lucida said, "you can definitely feel people holding their breath."

Next up for the Spiders is William & Mary on Thursday, Oct. 10.
