On the evening of Wednesday, March 27, Delta Gamma hosted its first philanthropic volleyball tournament, Anchor Slam, to raise money for Service for Sight.
Jen Darsie, Delta Gamma's vice president foundations, said she had organized the tournament because she had wanted the Zeta Gamma chapter to have a team-based philanthropy event. She chose volleyball because she thought it was a fun activity that would appeal to both male and female students, she said.
The six-on-six tournament was held in the Weinstein Center for Recreation and Wellness, and 13 teams participated. The tournament featured a female bracket and a male bracket, which included the coed Richmond Varsity Science and Students Engaging and Enacting a Dialogue on Service (SEEDS) teams, Darsie said.
The event raised $350, all of which will be given to Service for Sight, Delta Gamma's national philanthropy that assists the blind and visually impaired, Darsie said.
The winners of the tournament were the sisters representing Kappa Kappa Gamma in the female bracket and Varsity Science in the male bracket. The players on these teams were each awarded a $5 gift card to 8:15 at Boatwright, and both teams will receive personalized volleyballs decorated by the sisters of Delta Gamma, Darsie said.
Junior Mark Massaro, a member of the Varsity Science team, said he enjoyed Anchor Slam and was already looking forward to next year's tournament.
"It's always great when an event gives you the opportunity to do something fun, like play competitive volleyball, while simultaneously promoting a worthwhile cause," Massaro said.
