Two Richmond professors to teach in Germany this summer

Two University of Richmond faculty members will be teaching courses in Germany this summer for the Berlin study abroad program.

In addition to intensive German courses, students will now be able to enroll in either a history course taught by Dr. John Treadway or a marketing course taught by Dr. Dana Lascu.

"The arrangements that UR has in Berlin are phenomenal," Lascu wrote in an email. "And the city is affordable and safe. It is also wonderfully wild -- like Manhattan in the 1970s."

Treadway persuaded Lascu to partake in the program, Lascu said. Both Lascu and Treadway spend time in Berlin each summer, and Treadway thought it would be beneficial for students if they both could contribute to the German study abroad program. Lascu agreed.

Lascu will be teaching the same course she teaches at Richmond, International Marketing. But, instead of asking students to interview businesses overseas using Skype, she will send students to local companies to collect data for their projects.

Treadway's history class, Modern Germany, will be much more intensive in Berlin, he said. Each class will be three hours a day for six weeks.

"There's no better place to talk about German history than in the capital of Germany," he said. "It's one of the most exciting cities on the planet."

Students who enroll in any study abroad program gain a greater knowledge for the world and an appreciation for different cultures and different points of view, Treadway said.

Both professors have previously taught in foreign countries. Lascu taught a class in Austria in 2006 and more recently taught a class in a program organized by one of the university's partners, IESEG School of Management in Paris.

Treadway decided to become involved in study abroad programs more than 20 years ago, when he was part of a program in Austria, he said. He has owned an apartment in Berlin for 10 years and frequently travels to the city.

So far, there have been six applicants for the program in Berlin. The program will take place from June 22 to Aug.3.
