Journalism Professor Robert Hodierne's Afghanistan military documentary, "Afghanistan: The Surge," is to be aired Thursday Sept. 20, at 10 p.m. on Richmond WDCE channel 23.
The documentary focuses on a military unit in Afghanistan and the hardships it faces while fighting.
Hodierne said, "Well, so few Americans have any direct contact with people who are fighting our wars that I wanted to do a film that at the very least would give a broad general audience a vivid idea of what we ask these young people to endure on our behalf.
"Then, if the film explored themes beyond that, for instance, 'Are we on the right course in Afghanistan?,' then that would be bonus material."
Hodierne said he had spent the summer of 2010 in Afghanistan filming the documentary and was on research leave during the fall 2011 semester to finish editing and completing the documentary.
"The film has been shown on 60 different PBS stations around the country and has been accepted into the Washington West Film Festival," he said.
