The Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity will host SPEaster, a philanthropic event to raise money for the Virginia Home for Boys and Girls at 11 a.m. April 7 on the Westhampton Green.
Activities planned include an Easter egg hunt, an egg toss, and other games including a bean bag toss and a visit from Bandit's Adoption and Rescue of K-9s (BARK)'s sheltered dogs.
For music, several members of Sigma Phi Epsilon will perform as well as the Sirens and other student singing groups.
The fraternity will be setting up a table in the Commons on March 29, March 30, April 4 and April 5 to raise money for the Virginia Home. Members will also sell T-shirts to promote the event.
Junior Peter Magnone, vice president of programming for Sigma Phi Epsilon, said planning this event had been a great bonding experience for him and his fraternity brothers, who have been working extremely hard.
Virginia Home for Boys and Girls is a child and family services agency with five group homes located in the Richmond area.
"The Virginia Home for Boys and Girls is a very successful organization that Sig Ep hopes to build a longstanding relationship with, and we plan to continue working with them in the future," Magnone said.
About 25 to 30 Virginia Home residents will be attending the event. Children of all the University of Richmond faculty and staff were also invited to participate.
"Enriching the lives of local children will be a rewarding experience for everyone involved," Magnone said. "We hope that SPEaster helps the brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon and all of the University of Richmond to develop an appreciation for community building and service."
Junior David DuBois, president of Sigma Phi Epsilon, said this event was all about breaking out of the Richmond "bubble."
"We hope there is a greater mutual awareness between the Richmond community and our campus after the event," DuBois said. "We all know about the Richmond 'bubble.' This event will double as an opportunity to pop that 'bubble' while we simultaneously promote a wonderful organization within our community."
