Football lineman arrested on felony charges of hit-and-run

Richmond football offensive lineman redshirt sophomore Jimmy Speros was arrested Wednesday afternoon on felony charges of hit-and-run causing personal injury, and if he is convicted could face up to 10 years in prison, according to a report by Nick Dutton and Angela Pellerano of CBS6.

According to NBC12's Andy Jenks, Speros was later released on a $3,500 unsecured bond on Wednesday and will appear in General District Court today.

According to CBS6, Speros, who was driving a pick-up truck, collided into an SUV that was going east on Patterson Ave. at approximately 9 p.m. Saturday. Speros' truck eventually came to a stop after crashing into a utility pole. The driver of the SUV crashed into the brick wall of an office building. Speros left the scene of the crime on foot before police officers arrived, City of Richmond police said.

None of the drivers sustained injuries, but the driver and passenger of the SUV were taken to the hospital later on Saturday night, according to the CBS6 report.

According to the crash report, Speros' teammate, Mark Speir was a passenger in his car during the crash.

According to the Athletics Department's student athlete code of conduct, "Any student-athlete charged with a felony crime will immediately suspended from intercollegiate athletic participation and will thereafter be eligible only upon subsequent determination by the Director of Athletics. Disciplinary action for any criminal charges, indictments or suspected criminal activity will be reviewed and determined by the Head Coach, Sports Administrator and/or Director of Athletics."

CBS6 was on campus on Wednesday afternoon and visited Speros at his apartment on campus, but he was not there, according to its report.

Speros started all six games in appeared in last year, including the last five of the year. For his career, he has appeared in a total of nine games at tackle and center.

Jimmy Speros is the son of Jim Speros, who was an assistant coach for the Washington Redskins and the Buffalo Bills.

Attempts to contact police and involved parties before deadline were unsuccessful.
