Field hockey team wins play-in game, secures NCAA berth

The field hockey team won 2-1 at Ohio University in today's play-in game for the 2009 NCAA Championship tournament.

The Bobcats got an early lead, scoring during the first minute of the game, but would not score again as senior goalkeeper Jacki Raithel had five saves. Senior Sarah Blythe-Wood tied the game 46 seconds into the second half and junior Dani Pycroft scored the go-ahead goal less than 11 minutes later. The No. 19 Spiders have won 10 of their last 12 games to improve their record to 14-8 and moved into the Top 20 rankings this week for the first time this season.

The Spiders, winners of Sunday's Atlantic 10 championship, beat the Bobcats, the Mid-American Conference champions, to secure their sixth NCAA tournament appearance. They will play their first-round game at the University of Virginia at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
