Dear Sally,
I have a crush on this boy in my Econ. class, but we sit on opposite sides of the room, and I never get a chance to talk to him. Can I Facebook friend him to get my foot in the door?
- F-book Flirt
Dear Flirt,
Everyone knows Facebook is the ultimate networking (stalking) tool - who doesn't love to judge people through the Internet? But, if you think about it, creepin' can become crippling if it makes you feel awkward around someone. I promise, quoting someone's info back to them is not as charming as you'd think. If you really want to start up a thing with a guy you might want to - gasp - talk to him. It's never easy to cold-chat up someone, but you'll feel way better about it in the long run. Who really wants to be in the getting-to-know-you process and realize you already know all of someone's favorite movies, music and high school memories? Even inane small chat about sucky professors is better than that. So, in general, limit Facebook friending to people you actually know and have hung out with before. You don't want to be remembered forever as that random girl who Facebooks anyone she's ever laid eyes on.
Love,
Sally
