Charles Ryland, trustee emeritus and graduate, dies

Charles H. Ryland, a trustee emeritus, died on Oct. 22.

Ryland graduated from Richmond College in 1936 and the T.C. Williams School of Law in 1939 and received an honorary degree in 1971.

He was among the sixth generation of Ryland family members associated with the University of Richmond. His great-uncle, Robert Ryland, was the first president of Richmond College.

Born in Georgetown, Ky., Ryland moved to the Richmond campus at the age of three. His father was a chemistry professor for many years at Richmond.

An e-mail from the office of President Edward Ayers was sent to students, faculty and staff Monday morning to notify the community of Ryland's death.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 31, at Warsaw Baptist Church in Warsaw, Va.

The University flag will fly at half-staff Oct. 30, through Nov. 1, in recognition of his passing.

This story will be updated.
