News Brief: Compact to help low-income students afford college

The Board of Trustees of the College Board has issued a call to action from college educators across the country to help make college education a reality for all students.

President Edward Ayers took the first step in joining the initiative, known as the CollegeKeys Compact, by signing the commitment in order to become a charter member.

The program's goal is to help students from low-income backgrounds prepare for and get into college by providing financial aid, academic and emotional support.

The Compact also calls for a team of senior leaders to head up the initiative, which will be led by April Hill, chairwoman of the faculty committee on admission. The rest of the committee will include faculty, administration and one student representative. Once this committee is established, the next step will be to complete the CollegeKeys Inventory, which is a detailed checklist involving the University of Richmond's strengths and needs for student success. After the inventory is completed, the committee will be asked to establish goals and share effective practices to achieving these goals.
