New committee to address environment

Collegian Staff

In light of University of Richmond President Ayers' "Climate Commitment," dedicated to making campus more environmentally sustainable and friendly, the Richmond College Student Government Association is working to create a sustainability sub-committee. This committee will be made up of students from a variety of groups on campus that are focused on protecting the environment, as well as a member of the finance committee who will budget how much money is being used for these projects.

The hope is that this committee will support the actions taken by the administration, but it will also monitor the money being spent to do so.

The Senior Halloween Social is Thursday, Oct. 30 and is being held downtown at Element Lounge. Buses will run from C-Lot from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. RCSGA encourages all party-goers to wear costumes.

During the last week of the fall semester, there will be a White Ribbon Campaign that will begin as a silent forum and will be followed by a silent, candle-lit walk to the dean's office. The campaign aspires to bring awareness to people about the issue of male violence directed toward women. RCSGA is looking forward to helping the campaign raise money for publicity, t-shirts and white ribbons for students to wear.

Progress is being made in organizing the annual "Real World" event with support from the Career Development Center, RCSGA and WCGA. This event brings back alumni who have graduated within the past five years. The alumni provide current students with insight about what life is like after college in regard to jobs, money and anything that students want to know about graduation.

Student Advocacy is continuing its plan to create a Student Representation Committee that will gain a voice and presence during meetings with members of the Board of Trustees and the President's Cabinet. Currently, the proposal is being reviewed by the president's cabinet.

Two funding requests were also made to the RCSGA. The editor of The Messenger, Jennifer Patchen, asked for RCSGA too back for her plan to raise extra money so The Messenger could get two editions out rather than one this year, as well as create a longer issue that will be between 60 and 80 pages.

The newly developed club swimming team is hoping to receive extra funding that would allow it to rent a bus that could transport the team to one of the biggest swim meets on the East Coast at the University of Maryland.
