The Richmond men’s lacrosse team will face Air Force in the the play-in round of the NCAA Tournament at Colorado Springs, Colo., Wednesday. The winner will play top-seeded Duke in the first round at 5:15 Sunday.

Richmond (6-10), which is playing in its inaugural season as a varsity team, beat High Point 8-7 Saturday to win the Atlantic Sun Championship and earn an automatic bid. The Spiders upset top-seeded Mercer 14-6 in the semifinals Thursday.

“I’m at a bit of a loss of words here,” Richmond head coach Dan Chemotti told Richmond Athletics after Satuday’s win. “I’m really proud of our guys and the resolve that they showed and the confidence that they played with today.”

Air force upset No. 14 Fairfield to win the ECAC championship, which guaranteed the Falcons’ their first NCAA tournament appearance since 1988. Air Force (10-5) won eight of its final 10 games, including a 19-6 win over Mercer.

The winner will look to defeat the defending national champion Blue Devils (13-3). Loyola nearly beat Duke in last year’s opening round, but the Blue Devils overcame a five-goal deficit and eventually won in double overtime.
