Final Score: University of Richmond- 81, University of North Carolina at Charlotte- 61
What Happened: Charlotte’s 15-2 record, including 3-0 in the A-10, coming into the game had no effect on Darien Brothers and the Spiders. Brothers scored Richmond’s first 17 points, finishing with 39 (including a UR record-tying 8 three-pointers), and his energy raised the play of his teammates. UR coach Chris Mooney elected to go with a bigger starting lineup tonight, giving freshman forward Deion Taylor his first start, replacing guard Kendall Anthony. Taylor provided a spark, finishing with 13 points and playing solid defense on 49ers leading scorer Chris Braswell, who finished with just 10 points. Also, after having foul trouble in the first half, Richmond tightened up and avoided letting Charlotte get into the bonus.
Spider Positives: It was a complete-game effort for Richmond, as the 49ers were never really able to make a run to make it competitive. Mooney may have found his new starting lineup for good, as Taylor definitely meshed well with fellow front-court starters Greg Robbins and Alonzo Nelson-Ododa. Also, his presence in the paint helped open things up more for Brothers, and he obviously made the 49ers pay.
Spider Negatives: Not much to dislike in this game, though the foul problems in the first half definitely has been a recurring issue for Richmond, and it helped Charlotte keep the game within reach. Other than that, the only other note might be that Mooney would probably like to see a little more offensive production out of his bench, which was outscored, 26-14, in this game.
Up Next: The game all Spider fans circled on their calendars at the start of the season is finally almost here, as Richmond gets cross-town rival VCU at home on Thursday. The game, still dubbed the Black & Blue Classic, will be the first meeting between the teams since the Rams joined the Atlantic-10 conference. Expect the Robins Center to be loud by tip-off which is set for 7 p.m.
