What do you do during the weekends?
Find some jazz, go hiking with my wife and pester my Chicago and New York offspring via iChat — or in person when I can.

Professor Steve Nash in 1974, just after graduating from San Francisco State University, working on a story for a local weekly newspaper.

What’s the craziest thing you did when you were in college?
I commuted by motorcycle to UCLA from a cool place at the beach, just south of Malibu: my old, inert Ford station wagon. With the seats torn out and the window painting over, it made a great apartment for six months. Getting mail was tough though, and women seemed unimpressed.

What’s one thing your students would never guess about you?
I’ll bet they’ve guessed it all, and pretty accurately. But a handful may not know that I own a cat named Sublime.
