Spiders win 20th with big second half against Bonnies

The Spiders trailed the Bonnies by one at halftime but started the second half on a 13-0 run to take a 44-32 lead. The team kept a double-digit lead during the rest of the game and shot 52 percent during the half to run away from the Bonnies.

Richmond’s sixth-straight victory put the team in sole possession of first place in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The team also tied a school record for fastest to the 20-win mark — matching the 1986 team that also won its 20th game on Feb. 13.

Gonzalvez had a career-high five steals for Richmond, while shooting 8-13 from the field and 8-9 from the free throw line. Justin Harper was the second leading scorer with 14 points. He also had a team-high nine rebounds.

The Spiders limited the Bonnies to 32 percent shooting for the game (19-of-59) and held an opponent to under 60 points for the fifth time in six games. After giving up 32 points during the first half, the Spiders held the Bonnies to 17 points during the second half.

Richmond will host Fordham University at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17.
