Republican candidate Robert F. McDonnell convincingly won Virginia’s gubernatorial race on Tuesday night, defeating Democrat R. Creigh Deeds and ending years of control by Democrats in the state.
“Eight months ago, I applied for governor of Virginia,” McDonnell said during his victory speech. “Tonight, I got the job.”
McDonnell thanked the people of Virginia and congratulated his opponent on a well-fought race, and noted that Deeds’ calls for public servants in Virginia to serve was much needed.
McDonnell will succeed Democrat Timothy M. Kaine, the current chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
