Overall, things ran smoothly at Pig Roast this year, with few injuries and medical calls, John Jacobs, University of Richmond Police lieutenant, said.
“The fraternities should be commended,” Jacobs said. “The fraternities did a really good job with what they were supposed to do.”
But in a call from Fraternity Row, one student had to be taken to the hospital for alcohol-related reasons, Jacobs said. Throughout the day there were also three or four other medical calls for minor injuries such as stubbed toes, Jacobs said.
Pig Roast has had fewer liability issues and has become much safer since changes were made a few years ago, Jacobs said. One of the changes was that fraternities could no longer have kegs at their lodges.
“I’ve been here for 16 years,” he said, “and [Pig Roast] is different from what it used to be.”
No students were taken to jail, but Jacobs said there had been several arrests and summons for alcohol violations, and students will need to make court appearances.
There was also some damage in the residence halls, he said.
